I like to prepare myself for things well in advance and as my maternity leave was coming to an end, I was really anxious that this would mean the end of breastfeeding for me and my daughter. She was only 8 months when I went back to work and I really wanted to keep going until she was at least 1 (this was the target I had set myself). I tried to find advice from the UK on this but I think because in the UK, a lot of women take a year off and my feeling (which could be wrong) is that those who go back earlier are not breastfeeding, I really struggled to find advice.
I actually turned to my colleague in the US. In the US the maternity leave allowance is pretty mean in my opinion and this means that much more women seem to go back to work whilst still breastfeeding. She gave me some great advice and I felt a bit better about going back.
It was not easy though, and I’m pretty sure that in my workplace, I was the first person to ask for a lackable, private room to pump in! In the end I had to stick up posters to cover the glass meeting room I was given as a solution. It was ok.
My colleague pointed me in the direction of the Medela freestyle double breastpump which I would also really recommend. It is pricey but worth it.
mine came with ice packs and a bag etc which was really handy
