The first breastfeeding in public experience was a few weeks in and I built it up so much in my head. Our first outing involved making sure I had the right clothes on (I probably changed 5 times!). I had a scarf to cover me and we ensured that it was in a baby friendly place. We chose a Costa in a Next store and it was absolutely fine. It was actually quite liberating and made me feel quite proud. Proud as well as stupid for building it up so much in my head… People didn’t even look over.
Of course, there are still places where it is not so easy and people might stare but the more common breastfeeding in public becomes, the less of these places will exist.
I remember one day, I was on my own and my daughter was being very wriggly and not latching on properly and I was getting quite embarrassed when a lady walked over to me and said ‘I think what you are doing is amazing’. At that particular point I’d probably have preferred to be left alone but the comment was still welcome. These babies don’t always play ball but the more I fed in public, the more confident I became.
